ASW Ecology is an independent and professional ecological consultancy based in SE England and the West Midlands, but covering all of the UK. Started in 1997 by Andrew Waller, it specialises in wildlife surveys, ecological assessments and nature conservation issues. Andrew has both a M.Sc. in Environmental Conservation, and a B.Sc. (Hons) in Environmental Sciences. An ecological consultant is required when legally protected wildlife or habitats are affected by a potential development or when specific conditions need to be followed through after being inserted into a planning consent by a local planning authority. The impacts of such a development on protected wildlife can then be identified and mitigated so that the nature conservation legislation is fully complied with. ASW Ecology provides professional ecological expertise and advice to clients who require a qualified and experienced ecologist who works consistently to high standards. The need for comprehensive ecological mitigation in relation to developments has never been so great, as long as nature conservation is a central feature of such a package.
Most projects involves the surveying and assessment of sites for wildlife within locations designated for development or a change of land-use. Where required, sub-contractors are used, e.g. for flora and entomological surveys. Mitigation would then be provided to the client based on the survey results and the significance of the findings. Since 1997, clients have included councils, external consultancies, conservation organisations, developers, architects, and universities amongst others. Andrew has a number of licences from English Nature to survey specially protected wildlife species such as bats, shrews, barn owls and great crested newts. ASW Ecology can offer a comprehensive list of ecological services to potential clients.
